What is a Disciple?

Understanding the call to follow Christ in the Orthodox tradition

The Ancient Path

A disciple is literally a "learner" or "student," but in the Orthodox Christian tradition, discipleship means far more than intellectual study. It's a complete transformation of life, following the ancient path laid down by Christ and His apostles.

When Jesus called His first disciples, He didn't say "Study my teachings" but rather "Follow me." This personal, relational call remains at the heart of Orthodox discipleship today.

Three Dimensions of Discipleship

1. Learning the Faith

Disciples immerse themselves in Scripture, the writings of the Church Fathers, and the lived tradition of the Church. This isn't academic study but a living encounter with divine wisdom.

2. Practicing the Disciplines

Through prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and the sacramental life, disciples train their bodies and souls to be receptive to God's grace. These ancient practices shape us into the likeness of Christ.

3. Living in Community

Discipleship is never solitary. Within the Church, we learn from those who've walked before us, support one another in struggle, and together become the Body of Christ.

The Cost and the Joy

Jesus was clear about the cost of discipleship: "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me" (Luke 9:23). This isn't a path of ease but of transformation.

Yet paradoxically, in losing our lives for Christ's sake, we find true life. The disciplines that seem restrictive actually free us from the tyranny of our passions. The community that demands vulnerability becomes our greatest support.

Starting Your Journey

Every saint was once a beginner. The path of discipleship starts with a single step:

  • Begin with prayer - Even five minutes of morning prayer changes everything
  • Find a church community - Seek out an Orthodox parish where you can learn and grow
  • Start small with fasting - Wednesday and Friday fasting connects us to centuries of disciples
  • Read Scripture daily - Let God's word shape your mind and heart
  • Practice mercy - Look for opportunities to serve others in Christ's name

The Eternal Perspective

Orthodox discipleship isn't about self-improvement or personal fulfillment. It's about theosis—becoming by grace what God is by nature. This journey that begins in time extends into eternity.

As St. Athanasius famously said, "God became man so that man might become god." This is the astounding destiny of every disciple: to participate in the divine nature through union with Christ.

An Invitation

The call to discipleship extends to you today, just as it did to fishermen by the Sea of Galilee two thousand years ago. Christ still says, "Follow me," and the Church still provides the path.
